According to her uncle, the semi-official Etemad Online website in Iran announced this week that a 22-year-old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini had passed away after being detained by the country’s morality police.
According to the Iranian state news outlet ISNA, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has commissioned an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her passing.
Mahsa Amini and her family were stopped by a morality police patrol on Tuesday night as they attempted to visit relatives in Tehran after travelling from the Kurdistan region of Iran. The morality police is a specialised division that upholds stringent dress regulations for women, including the wearing of the headscarf.
Human rights advocates who have talked to the family said that the police forced Amini into a police vehicle after snatching her up, according to IranWire.
According to IranWire, when her brother Kiarash tried to interfere, he was informed that his sister was being brought to the police station for an hour of “re-education.”
According to Kiarash, he never again saw his sister awake.
An ambulance arrived and discretely brought his sister to the hospital as he waited outside the police station for her to be freed.
According to Kiarash, who spoke with IranWire, she had a heart attack or a stroke while at the police station and was in a coma.
Following her detention on Tuesday, Amini reportedly experienced a “heart attack,” according to Tehran police on Thursday.
The video was altered to show CCTV footage showing a woman sitting down, getting up to talk to a “expert,” touching her clothing, and then falling to the ground.
The woman is being carried by five men while apparently unconscious in the video below. Another frame then shows an ambulance.
At 19 seconds into the video, there is an edit that shows the woman rising up and speaking. It appears to be daytime outdoors before the clip. The cut makes it appear dark.
On Saturday, Iranian authorities claimed to have performed an autopsy on Amini’s body. Mehdi Forozesh, the director of Iran’s Forensic Medical Organization, stated on state television that the results would be made public after additional review by medical professionals.
The White House is extremely concerned by Amini’s passing, according to Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor to US President Joe Biden, in a tweet sent out on Friday.
