A pregnant woman was shot and killed outside an Amazon warehouse while medical professionals delivered her baby, who is still struggling to life.
On the evening of January 8, the 31-year-old lady known as Kyla O’Neal was with her ex-fiance, with whom she had just broken up.
Donte Rapheal McCray, her ex-fiancé and the baby’s father, was taken into custody and charged with second-degree manslaughter.
Police arrived on the scene quickly and discovered the woman shot inside a parked car outside an Amazon factory in Lakeville, Minnesota, US.
O’Neal was taken to a local hospital in a hurry before she passed away from her gunshot wound.
According to his grandmother, the infant boy, Messiah, is fighting for his life since his brain cannot function from a lack of oxygen.
Kyla’s mum, Katina O’Neal said: “I need him to pull through this. I can’t lose both of them, not right now.
“He lost a lot of oxygen to the brain, so he has no brain functioning right now. I’m holding onto faith. I’m praying. God got the last word, so hopefully, He gives him to me.”
Just hours before she passed away, according to Katina, Kyla broke up with McCray, who allegedly worked at the Amazon plant.
Kyla, who had a second daughter with the suspect, is survived by a total of four kids.
Katina said: “All she ever thought about doing was making a life for her and her kids. She was looking forward to this birth.”
Commenting on the tragic incident, Police Commander William Gerl said it would be a “miracle” if the newborn baby survives.
He said: “When we have a situation where a pregnant female has been critically injured, it just adds another whole layer of stress and emotion to that call because now, we’ve got another human being we’re trying to save as well.
“Obviously, we’re all hoping the baby is doing well and is able to survive and thrive, and that will be a miracle and great news if that happens.”
According to McCray’s criminal history, he was given a gun possession prohibition order and has a criminal conviction.
He has been questioned by the police, according to Commander Gerl, and is helping them out.
The 32-year-old suspect is being detained at the Dakota County Jail and is due to show up in court today.
